Responsible gaming: stay in control
Warning signs, practical limits and people you can talk to in Malaysia. You do not need to be in crisis to call.
Start here
Gambling is a paid activity with a built-in cost, not a way to earn money. The odds favour the operator over time, as our guide to house edge shows with real sums. Not gambling at all is always a complete and reasonable choice.
This site is for adults aged 18 and over. Under Malaysian law, online gambling is generally an offence, and syariah law separately prohibits gambling for Muslims. Read what the law says.
Warning signs
Any one of these is a good reason to pause and talk to someone:
- You spend more money or time than you planned, more than once.
- You bet again to win back what you lost.
- You borrow money, sell things or use savings or bill money to gamble.
- You hide your gambling or lie about it to family or friends.
- You feel restless, anxious or irritable when you try to stop.
- Your sleep, work, studies or relationships are suffering.
Gamblers Anonymous publishes a self-test of 20 questions. It says most compulsive gamblers answer yes to at least seven.
Limits that work
Limits work best when you set them before you start and when you are calm:
- Money: decide on an amount you can afford to lose completely, and treat it as already spent. Keep it away from rent, bills and savings.
- Time: set an alarm and stop when it rings, whatever the balance shows.
- State of mind: do not gamble when you are drunk, upset, tired or trying to fix a money problem.
- Losses: never chase them. A loss is the cost, not a debt the game owes you.
- Credit: never borrow to gamble, and do not lend your bank account to anyone.
Help in Malaysia
We did not find a national helpline in Malaysia that deals only with gambling. These services take calls about the distress, family and money pressures that gambling can cause, and gambling is a valid reason to call.

Block gambling sites
Removing easy access helps. BetBlocker is a free, non-profit tool that blocks gambling websites and apps on your devices. You choose a period, from one day to five years, and once a restriction starts it cannot be lifted early.
You can also ask your bank about spending controls, delete gambling apps and accounts, and let someone you trust look after your cards for a while.
Worried about someone?
Pick a calm moment, describe what you have noticed and avoid blaming. Do not pay off their debts as a first step, because that can keep the cycle going. Encourage them to call one of the services above. You can call as well, because family members are affected too.
If you are a parent, keep your accounts, cards and TAC codes out of children’s reach. BetBlocker also offers parental controls.
